Australian Behavioral Response Study

The Behavioural Response Study (BRS) with Australian humpback whales and seismic sources project aims to 1) determine reactions of migrating humpback whales exposed to airgun arrays, 2) determine factors that affect the responses of whales, and 3) determine the effectiveness of soft-start (ramp-up) procedures as a mitigation method. In September/October 2010, migrating humpback whales off the East Coast of Australia will be exposed to a single airgun. Before the controlled exposure experiment starts, the airgun and acoustic recorders will be used to determine sound propagation characteristics of the East Coast study location. In 2011 at the East Coast site, a 4-element seismic source array will be used to investigate responses of humpback whales to the first three stages of a ramp-up procedure. There are growing international concerns over the effects of E&P sounds on marine life, particularly sounds from seismic surveys. And while cetaceans, fish and sea turtles get the most attention, concerns extend much more widely. In response, governments are increasingly requiring measures to mitigate potential harm to marine life. These measures can significantly affect our industry's operations and their cost, and they increasingly restrict the E&P industry’s ability to access areas for oil and gas exploration and production. Together with the E&P industry, IAGC continues to be engaged in the public policy discussions on this issue. And along with a limited number of visionary E&P companies, we continue to invest in and provide technical support for and oversight of scientific research that is filling the gaps in knowledge and eliminating uncertainty about the possible effects of E&P sound on marine life.
